A formal analysis of Mark Rothko’s abstract painting White over Red, which I perform while singing to the melody of the Polish national anthem (as the color composition resembles the Polish flag). The work is a playful commentary on patriotism, on how artists perceive the world, and on the relativity and subjectivity of visual associations. It also responds to common narratives about the “universality of art,” which I simply don’t believe in and from which I distance myself.
